Paparazzi: It’s a love/hate thing

As fans of Rob & Stew, many of us have a love/hate relationship with the paparazzi.  We try to make a distinction between the pix that offend us and those that don’t.  Sometimes it is very obvious, but there are times when it is a very thin line.  There is much debate on fan sites and forums, so let’s explore the two sides of this relationship.

Sometimes we love the papz because when there are no photo shoots, set pix, or press tours, they provide our only view of Rob & Stew.  It’s tough weathering those droughts when there are no “working” public appearances.  We miss seeing them.  Every once in a while, we’ll get a random fan pic or encounter.  Other than that, the pickings are slim.  So in those times, one could argue that the papz are a necessary evil.  They provide us a little window into what our favorite couple is up to.  Is it any of our business? Of course not.  But we are fans and we can’t help but be curious.  And as long as the pix show Rob & Stew smiling and happy, we love the papz for filling the void.

However, there are also pix that are considered by many to be too invasive.  The pix that the papz get are often taken while Rob & Stew are trying to avoid being photographed.  Running through the airport, or hopping into a waiting cab is not an ideal time to have your picture taken.  I cringe when I see those pix of Rob & Stew covering their faces or cowering inside a car.  So invasive!  We hate the papz when they treat Rob & Stew like animals in a zoo.  Don’t even get me started on the aerial views of their home, because you may see smoke shooting out of my ears.  Completely creeptastic!  And whether they were there or not at the time the pix were taken is irrelevant in my opinion.  It’s not a public place like an airport, restaurant, or shopping mall. It is/was their home, where they do, and should, expect a reasonable amount of privacy.  So no matter how you slice it, those pix are an enormous invasion of privacy.  Period.

In order to combat the taking of those kinds of pix, the state of California has just passed a much more stringent law aimed at the paparazzi. Last month, the legislature passed a bill that will hit reckless photographers with harsh penalties including possible imprisonment.  Under the new law, photographers who break traffic laws or interfere with the operation of a celebrity’s car can receive a maximum $5,000 fine and one year imprisonment.  It’s certainly a HUGE step in the right direction towards controlling a situation that has gotten way out of hand in many instances.  Only time will tell how well it will be enforced and how effective it is.

As much as I enjoy a glimpse into their supercool, mysterious, ninja ways because I heart them & their relaysh, it’s obviously none of my business.  A cute fan pic here and there really is enough to satisfy me during the down times.  Rob & Stew may feel that they provide the fans with enough pix via “official” appearances, and I would certainly agree.  But I know that some fans are rabid & always hungry for more.  As long as there’s a market for them, the papz will continue to take the pix.  So this debate will continue, as will the love/hate relationship.

To be a fan does not mean to be fanatic. Fans have also to learn to be adults and react as responsible people. We must keep in our memory the death of Lady Diana, nearly “murdered” by papps. We can also suppose that the photographied people consent and allow to photographs or papps to take some pictures. If they don’t, the papps have to go away. Good law that this californian one. At last, we do not own or possessed Rob and Kristen. I do not like this appropriation of those two by the fans…They are persons, human being and have to live their own lifes. Now, we have to be patient… Breaking Dawn works are on the way !

Completely agree.. It’s a love/hate thing.. But it’s so obvious when they don’t want their pic taken and I think there should definitely be privacy laws set in place with the whole helicopter shots of their cars outside their house..

Kristen gets alot of shit for giving them the finger, I remember when it came on the news when she was in Sydney and everyone said oh nice way to greet your Aussie fans.. Well I’m an Aussie and I actually clapped and cheered at the pics.. Good on her.

The line of privacy is blurring and I feel sorry for them both when I see the pics where they’re obviously not comfortable or not in the mood

Nice post HEA! I agree totally about the love/hate thing .. but a line MUST be drawn and the people concerned (paps/fans etc) must respect it.

This is really true! When I saw that picture of Robert, covering his face with his hat and how the papz are around him. I realize I don’t want any papz pic at all(of R/K), I do realize they provide to the mass IF the mass wants it. I don’t mind to see pics of R/K in promotion of there movies only, I do not mind it at all. Nice post HEA!!

i agree cause at some point we treated them like aproperty that we have the right to possess and control wich is totaly disgustin since as far as i know they are human beings who have alife exactly like us and they need to enjoy and live this life normally,so if we realy love them we should get off their backs

I completely agree with this post. It’s a love/hate thing.
I have to admit I am one of the fans who actually ‘enjoys’ the quiet/down time in between films/appearances. Especially my boyfriend enjoys it as he doesn’t have to share his time with Rob pics and busy times keeping up with the news and pics and vids.
Steam is also coming out of my ears when I see or hear that there has been aerial pics made, or that they have been seen on the airport.
I enjoy it more when I don’t hear a thing and only once in a while see a fanpic as that means that they finally have some private time for themselves without being chased all the time.

It’s good that there is a new law in California and indeed time will tell if it’s suffice enough for the Celebrity’s.

This law could not be passed soon enough, to see what Rob had to go thru that one night, kstew pictured falling at the airport.. what makes the paps think that this ok and just not intrusive… let alone also being the cause of some of the incidents that happen or could happen. I love a good pic as much as another but if it is with there safety or privacy treaded on.
Not to mention the steamiest enjoyable pics are when they aren’t having to hide and being able to just be Robsten.
