Breaking Dawn Brouhaha?

It was announced last week that Breaking Dawn Part II would be released in theaters in November of 2012, a year after Part I. The uproar started almost immediately. Panties were in a serious bunch! Peeps took to the Twitterverse and Fan Forums to air their grievances. Here’s a sampling:

“I’ll die waiting that long between films!”

“I feel like I’ve been conned! What happened to Summer, 2012?!”

“Summit is crazy! The fans will lose interest by then!”

First of all, no one will die waiting a year between Part I and Part II. Chill. There was a full year between the release of Twilight and New Moon, and we all survived. We also had lots of promotion leading up to New Moon that kept us sufficiently satisfied while we waited. I’m sure the Summit marketing machine will be in overdrive to make sure we are entertained between the Breaking Dawn films as well. Many sequels of franchise films have at least a year between films. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Spiderman are just a few examples of this. They all came out unscathed, with large fandoms still in tact.

Secondly, no one was conned. Please. Summit never said that Part II would be released in the summer of 2012. That was all fan supposition partially based on the fact that Eclipse was released the summer after New Moon. Summit is most concerned about their bottom line. Sure, they may have had their eye on the summer as a possible release date. But with the announcement of several blockbusters hitting theaters at that time, the field is already crowded. Besides, the fall has proved to be a successful season for the Twilight Saga films… Twilight and New Moon made some serious cash.

Lastly, the fans will not lose interest because there’s a whole year between Part I and Part II. For realz, y’all?! Not. Gonna. Happen. This is a franchise that seems to grow and gain new fans daily. If anything, there may be more fans by 2012, not less. Those same franchises that I mentioned above that had more than a year between films? They not only survived, they thrived. Their revenues increased, and so did their fan bases. More and more people are jumping on the Twilight bandwagon every day. My Mom is a recent convert and now wants to come over for a film festival at my house to catch up! Lord help me! But I digress… that’s another blog post for another time.

I’m actually happy that there is a year between the final two films. Breaking Dawn is a hella long book. There is a lot of material that will probably prove more challenging to bring to life than the three previous books. Um… Renesmee, anyone?! Or how about the 5324983 nomad vampires that make their debut in the second half of this book? That fight scene is way more epic than the Eclipse one. So that’s going to take some time to perfect in post-production, I would assume. So really, what’s the rush? I would rather there be ample time to do it well, than have something that’s contrived and craptastic.

Lastly, is anyone really that surprised that Summit is going to milk this Twilight Cow for as long as they possibly can?! I’m not. Not even a little bit.

I was more confused than upset that they were waiting so long to release the second part..
    why are they stalling ?
why wont they just end the series already and get it over with ?
then it only took me about 2.5 seconds later after asking myself these questions to realize what you just said.
They are going to try to keep Twilight alive for as long as they possibly can.
Eclipse was a disappointment to me I just hope Breaking Dawn is worth the wait.

Great post HEA! I couldn't agree with you more.. I would rather have a quality project that they take their time on, than a movie they just threw together. Plus I am not surprised at all that Summit is milking this for all they can…why wouldn't they from a business standpoint. I for one cannot wait to see these movies…and I can guarantee my ass will be in a theater chair at midnight in Nov. of 2012. I definatly won't be falling off the bandwagon…I am sure we will pick up many more along the way. Love the post…keep them coming! <3

Good analysis, HEA. While summer would've been awesome for us fans, the other, admittedly higher grossing, franchises in summer 2012 would've killed any serious BO potential for BD2. Holiday season has been good for Twilight, and nailing down a release date now should help in keeping that weekend clear of other contestants.

As selfish as it is, I actually look forward to seeing a year worth of promotion for the latter film, since chances are the cast would otherwise go completely under the radar to work on their various post-Twilight filming gigs.

    the
"summit is crazy..fans will lose interest by then"
    quote was quite funny.
    True fans never lose interest.
There is no in between when it comes to the Twilight saga.
You either always liked it..or you never did.

very true PrettyBrownEyes.,you either love it or hate it….there are twilight lovers and twilight haters..to each their own…

The real fans are here to stay and arent going anywhere..(like me)

hopefully while we wait for the movies SM can finish and release Midnight Sun (hey, a girl can dream right??)..

i completely agree about the milking thing…summit LOVES its money..the real twihards know this…at least we'll get to see more of the cast (mostly R and K)..love them!!

My first thought was, "Boy, they're really dragging this out." But… if they are actually attempting to spend some money this time around (which they surely have at their disposal, by now) and do a good job with all the CGI that is involved, then a year is not only justified, but a really good thing. I love the cast and love watching these movies, but I have also been let down by each one in terms of how well they follow the books and how certain elements (make-up, costuming, CGI) look cheap compared to other big blockbusters where a LOT more time is spent on post-production.

So, if Summit is actually planning to do a good job on the details this time around and end the series with a bang with some top-notch special effects, then I am all for taking another year to complete part 2. Nothing would make me happier than to see at least one Twilight film look like the beautiful and seamless fantasy that it should, as opposed to a cheap and quickly thrown together made-for-TV movie.

I can live BD one and 2 being far apart as long as Bella wakes up and sees her self in the mirror red eyes, and the moments of her and Edward when she, sees him with her Vampire eyes. "swoon"

I definitely think that people need to chill out. I always love how you guys put things in to perspective on this blog. it's great. It's totally great. You're right. Nobody is gonna die. Nobody is gonna get conned. Really…if you think about it…we're pretty darn lucky that Breaking Dawn Part l and Part ll are a year apart. Because that means that they are taking this movie into serious perspective and that they want to make it pristine. That means they are going to do this slowly, calmly, professionally, and smoothly which I have been PRAYING for. I will faithfully wait as long as it takes for these two movies to be made. A year is definitely not gonna kill us. It's actually really exciting!!!! It gives us even more time to enjoy everything. By the end of Breaking Dawn…that's a big moment. Everybody in this fanbase will be completely changed. (the real fans, anyway). I don't want to rush that moment. That is the final! Why rush it!?!?!? Enjoy the flow. Live Twilight. Live ROBSTEN!!! Between that year, I'll just have fun watching the the three DVDs and Robstening!!! Lol. Who's with me here?!?!?
